Infrastructure for demand-driven commerce

Your website may be saying no before your business has decided.

Turn Catalogue Blind Spots into Structured Opportunities.

Specify lets customers describe requirements beyond the published catalogue, translates those requirements into a Structured Opportunity, and evaluates them against the business's Capability Map, Constraint Record and human approval process.

See the Catalogue Blind Spot, draft Structured Opportunity and constraint check before entering an email.

No unsupported price, feasibility, production or delivery commitment.

This applies wherever customers need to specify an outcome and the business must evaluate real capability before it can offer it: configurable products, custom interiors, personalised goods, made-to-order manufacturing and specification-led B2B supply.

We require approximately 18 metres of school lockers with integrated benches, delivered in two phases. The new area must open before 15 August.

An empty result here would be a Premature No. The website has reached the edge of its published catalogue, not necessarily the edge of the business.

  1. Do you have final room drawings with verified wall dimensions?

The customer request is now an evaluable commercial object rather than an unstructured message.

  1. The product family and bench configuration may be viable.

  3. The requested opening date cannot be offered without capacity approval.

The opportunity remains open. The date remains unapproved.

Nothing about the factory changed. The website stopped treating a Catalogue Blind Spot as a business decision. That is the shift from catalogue-led commerce to demand-driven commerce.

Try it

This is a Specify storefront, running.

Two different businesses, one platform. Both let a customer describe what they need instead of choosing from what has already been published. Pick one and use it as a customer would.

Built-in storage sold by dimension, material and installation rather than by SKU.

Things worth trying

  • Ask for a run length the catalogue does not list
  • Change the material and watch the constraints update
  • Request a delivery date the store cannot confirm

Start your own

Two questions, and the next screen is the price.

Both demos above are ordinary Specify stores. Setting one up for your own products starts here.

The Premature No

Did the business reject the request, or did the website simply stop knowing what to do?

A Premature No occurs when a customer request is rejected before the business has properly evaluated whether it can be fulfilled.

The rejection may appear as an empty search result, an unavailable configuration, a rigid filter or a product page with no route to request something different. The website reaches the limit of its published catalogue and treats that limit as if it were the limit of the business.

A Premature No does not mean the request was necessarily viable. It means the decision was made without sufficient information, relevant capability rules or commercial judgment.

Demand-driven commerce

Informed commercial decision

Demand-driven commerce does not mean producing anything a customer requests. It means serious demand is understood before a responsible commercial outcome is determined.

The same Premature No appears in configurable furniture, custom interiors, personalised products, made-to-order goods, industrial configuration and other forms of capability-dependent commerce.

The evaluable object

One informal request in. One commercially usable opportunity out.

A Structured Opportunity records what the customer wants, what they have specified, what remains unknown, which alternatives they may accept and what action is required next.

Submit one enquiry and receive one annotated Structured Opportunity containing:

  • Customer-supplied requirements
  • Missing information
  • The next useful questions
  • Acceptable alternatives to confirm
  • Likely capability path
  • Applicable constraints
  • Required decision owner
  • Preliminary decision state

The Structured Opportunity is the core object of the wider platform: customer intent made usable by a merchant, a production partner, an AI assistant or a connected capability network without losing the evidence and authority behind the decision.

Governed commercial logic

A useful answer requires more than a plausible match.

Specify evaluates each Structured Opportunity against a Capability Map and Constraint Record, then preserves the approved outcome and reasoning in a Decision Record.

Existing or configurable offer available

  • Product family supported
  • Required dimensions within approved range
  • Material and production method available
  • No additional approval required

Present the valid product or configuration.

Human review required

  • Integrated bench option is supported
  • Run length requires layout validation
  • Phased delivery may be possible
  • Technical and operations approval required

Route the Structured Opportunity to the named owners.

Request cannot be offered under current conditions

  • Required dimension exceeds supported production range, or
  • Requested date conflicts with approved capacity rules, and
  • No acceptable alternative has been identified

Create a Decision Record explaining the reason and any responsible alternative.

The purpose is not to guarantee a sale. The purpose is to ensure every serious request can receive an informed, explainable decision. The same governed pattern can extend from one manufacturer's catalogue to connected merchant, supplier and production capability over time.

Measure the Capability Gap

How much customer demand sits beyond what your website can currently understand?

The Capability Gap is the difference between what the business can actually deliver and what its website enables customers to discover, configure or request. Use your own process to estimate where that gap may be visible.

per month
%
%
%

Based on your inputs, approximately 12 enquiries per month may reach a Catalogue Blind Spot and require manual interpretation before the business can decide what is possible.

This does not estimate revenue or conversion. It identifies a possible Capability Gap and the demand pattern a Request Readiness Sprint would examine first.

Begin with one possible Premature No

See whether the website stopped before the business had enough information to decide.

Start with our example, paste a redacted enquiry or describe a request your company commonly receives outside the published catalogue.

Try the example

Use the locker enquiry and see it move from Catalogue Blind Spot to Structured Opportunity and Decision Record.

Paste a redacted enquiry

Use the customer's wording after removing names, prices and sensitive project information.

Describe a typical enquiry

Explain a request your company receives when the available product pages or filters do not provide a responsible route forward.

What appears before any email is requested

  • Potential Catalogue Blind Spot
  • Customer-supplied requirements
  • Draft Structured Opportunity
  • Missing information
  • One or two next useful questions
  • Likely capability path
  • One applicable constraint or authority limitation
  • Preliminary decision state
  • Preliminary fit indication

No account or email is required before the preliminary result.

Specify is reviewing early demand patterns to learn where Premature No events and Capability Gaps are commercially significant. Each reviewed request tests the core demand-driven commerce model: intent, capability, constraints, decision and learning.

A controlled commercial experiment

Do not implement demand-driven commerce before the evidence supports it.

The Request Readiness Sprint examines one repeated Catalogue Blind Spot in your business, models the relevant capability and constraints, prototypes the future decision process and produces a Pilot Decision Brief recommending expand, revise or stop. The immediate objective is a useful implementation decision; the wider objective is to prove a reusable commercial architecture for demand-driven commerce.

  1. Opportunity Ledger sample

A structured record of what customers requested, including incomplete, rejected and unresolved demand.

  2. Capability Map

The governed products, materials, dimensions, modifications, methods and approval paths available behind the catalogue.

  3. Constraint Record

The rules that determine what can be offered, under which conditions and with whose approval.

  4. Prototype Structured Opportunity

One real enquiry translated into a commercially evaluable object.

  5. Prototype Decision Record

The proposed evaluation, outcome, owner and reasoning for that opportunity.

  6. Pilot Decision Brief

The evidence-based recommendation to expand, revise or stop.

The Sprint is successful when it produces a deliberate decision, even when the decision is not to implement.

Inspect it yourself

Every part of the commercial logic is open to inspection.

Specify does not ask you to take the transformation on faith. Every stage of it runs on this site, with your own enquiry, before you give us anything.

Where this goes

One difficult request today. A different commercial system underneath it.

The same architecture applies wherever dimensions, materials, drawings, installation, phasing, production and approvals cannot be reduced to a product filter: configurable products, custom interiors, personalised goods, made-to-order manufacturing and specification-led B2B supply.

The longer-term direction includes dynamic product matching, a merchant operating system that maintains its own capability, merchant and supplier capability networks, AI-native commerce interfaces, and an ecosystem where new demand-driven companies can be built.

Long-term direction. Not a claim that these capabilities are available today.

Let customers describe what they need before the catalogue decides what is possible.
